Five real hotels worth building a family trip around

Not a generic "top family resorts" roundup — five specific, currently-operating properties, each included for one concrete reason: a named kids' club, a specific water park, a specific room format, or a specific feature you can actually go and check for yourself. Ranked five to one.

5
Bintan Island, Indonesia

Club Med Bintan Island

An all-inclusive resort on Bintan Island, reachable by a roughly one-hour ferry from Singapore — genuinely useful if a family is already routing through Southeast Asia and wants a beach stop without a long additional flight. The resort runs three separate age-banded kids' clubs: Petit Club Med (ages 2–3), Mini Club Med (ages 4–10), and Junior Club Med (11–17), each with its own staff and its own daily schedule rather than one mixed-age room.

Mini Club Med and Junior Club are included in the all-inclusive rate; the youngest tier, Petit Club Med, is a paid add-on. Activities for the 4–10 group include flying trapeze instruction, archery, and supervised water sports — run by Club Med's G.O. staff rather than general hotel staff. Under-4s stay free year-round, and discounts of up to 40% apply for ages 4–11.

Why it's here: a genuine one-hour-ferry beach option for a family already in Singapore, with a real flying-trapeze program for kids as young as four.

4
Suffolk, England

Center Parcs Elveden Forest

A forest village near Thetford with 866 separate lodges and villas sleeping up to 4,216 guests at once — families book a standalone lodge, not a hotel room, each with its own deck. The centerpiece is the Subtropical Swimming Paradise, an indoor water park held at a constant 29.5°C year-round and included free and unlimited for every guest for the length of their stay, not sold separately by the day.

The water park includes a wave pool, the Wild Water Rapids ride, the Tropical Cyclone raft ride, and two shallower zones built specifically for younger children, Venture Bay and Venture Harbour. Outside the pool, the resort runs on-site archery, adventure golf, and lake watersports across the forest itself, and stocks baby facilities including Ella's Kitchen food stations and in-lodge cots.

Why it's here: unlimited access to a genuinely heated, year-round indoor water park is bundled into the room rate, not charged per visit.

3
United States & Canada

Great Wolf Lodge

Not one hotel but a 23-location North American chain, and it's the one on this list built entirely around a single idea: an indoor water park kept at 84°F regardless of the season outside, so a January stay works the same as a July one. It started as Black Wolf Lodge in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin in 1997, generally credited as the country's first indoor water park hotel, and was renamed Great Wolf Lodge in 2000.

Every lodge runs the same free daily schedule for overnight guests: morning family yoga, story time, character appearances, and a nightly family dance party, on top of the water park itself. Its newest and largest property, in Perryville, Maryland, opened in June 2023 with 700 family suites and a 126,000-square-foot water park; its Garden Grove, California location sits about three miles from Disneyland, making it a genuine second-stop option for a Southern California trip rather than a standalone destination.

Why it's here: it's a repeatable format, not a one-off resort — 23 locations run the identical water-park-plus-suite model, so the choice is really "which city," not "which hotel."

2
Providenciales, Turks & Caicos

Beaches Turks & Caicos

An all-inclusive resort on Grace Bay split into six themed villages (Caribbean, Seaside, Italian, French, Key West, and Treasure Beach), built around a licensed partnership with Sesame Street rather than a generic mascot program. Camp Sesame runs supervised kids' camps from morning to late afternoon with certified staff, split by age band — 8–10 year-olds get scavenger hunts and beach soccer, 11–14 year-olds get beach volleyball and flag football — and the characters appear for scheduled events including a Sesame Street breakfast and an evening outdoor show with Elmo, Big Bird, and Abby Cadabby.

The resort's water park is a specific, measurable thing, not marketing language: 45,000 square feet, more than 11 slides, a lazy river, and a splash deck with water cannons and a pirate ship, with two on-site food trucks and a diner within the water park itself so a day there doesn't require leaving for meals.

Why it's here: an actual licensed Sesame Street program with age-split camps, not a themed pool with a mascot costume walking around.

1
Palm Jumeirah, Dubai

Atlantis, The Palm

Dubai's largest water park, Aquaventure, sits on 42 acres attached to the hotel and includes more than 105 slides and rides — the single largest water-park footprint of any property on this list. Its signature ride, Leap of Faith at Neptune Tower, is a 60-foot near-vertical drop that passes through a clear tunnel inside a shark tank, restricted to guests over 1.2m tall; younger children have their own separate, lifeguarded zone, Splashers Lagoon & Cove, built specifically for under-1.2m guests with mini slides and splash pads rather than a scaled-down version of the adult rides.

The hotel's own kids' club, the Atlantis Explorers Club, is built as ten distinct themed rooms rather than one playroom — among them a command centre with video games and climbing walls, a roleplay "mini town," a Little Foodies teaching kitchen, and a STEM-focused Creation Station.

Why it's here: at 42 acres and 105+ rides, it's the largest single water park attached to any hotel on this list, with a genuinely separate under-1.2m zone rather than a shared kiddie corner.

How this list was put together

Every property above is a real, currently-operating resort or hotel chain, chosen for one specific, checkable feature rather than a general reputation for being "family-friendly." Figures on water park size, ride counts, room counts, and program ages come from each operator's own published information at the time of writing and are worth reconfirming directly with the property before booking, since capacity, pricing, and program details change. The Family Five has no booking relationship, partnership, or paid placement with any property listed here — see our Terms of Use for the full independence statement.
